During the month of October, most of the Bartlesville public schools and the Dewey Elementary schools conduct canned food drives. On the first of November we go to each school and collect the cans and bring them back the corps. We average about 13,000 cans that have to be sorted to remove any expired or damaged cans. We use the cans to make up the nonperishable food boxes that will go out with the Angel Tree family recipients for Christmas.
It is a very physical job: lifting boxes filled with cans, walking and standing.
Large groups welcomed as it is a very large undertaking that lasts for days.
